Abstract A deep eutectic solvent (DES) consisting of choline chloride and urea (1:2 molar ratio) was prepared using a heating and stirring method to extract ulvan from Ulva lactuca. Ulvan extracted using deep eutectic solvents (DES) had a higher yield than the aqueous-HCl extraction method. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis of the crude ulvan extracted using DES revealed functional groups similar to those extracted with the aqueous-HCl method. The ulvan extracted with DES exhibited the highest scavenging activity against the DPPH radical compared to the aqueous-HCl extraction. These results revealed that DES can be an eco-friendly solvent for ulvan extraction, achieving a higher yield.
