Abstract |
Schistosomiasis is a debilitating parasitic disease caused by infection with flatworm trematodes belonging to the genus Schistosoma. This disease poses significant health concerns in tropical and subtropical regions, affecting millions of people worldwide. In an effort to explore novel therapeutic approaches, this study aimed to investigate the therapeutic potential of bio-synthesized selenium nanoparticles (Bio-SeNPs) derived from Capsicum annuum against schistosomiasis in mice. Fourty female mice were divided into five groups: a normal control group, a Bio-SeNPs-treated group without infection, an infected untreated group, a Bio-SeNPs-treated infected group, and a Praziquantel (PZQ)-treated infected group. The results of this study demonstrated that Bio-SeNPs (0.5 mg/kg), significantly reduced the total worm burden in infected mice. Furthermore, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed substantial damage to the worms' bodies and teguments, indicating the potent antischistosomal activity of Bio-SeNPs. Additionally, histopathological examination of liver tissues showed a notable decrease in the diameter of hepatic granulomas in the Bio-SeNPs-treated group compared to the infected untreated group. These findings suggest that Bio-SeNPs are a promising alternative treatment for minimizing hepatic damage caused by schistosomiasis in mice, warranting further exploration of their therapeutic potential. |
